Math modelling super visualisation problem?

A hole is drilled in a solid cylindrical rod of radius R by a drill that also has radius R. The axes of the road and drill meet at right angles, and the hole made separates the rod into two pieces. Find volume of material removed by the drill.

This has something to do with the method of cross sections...

I think one half of this solid has as square base which curves up to a curved top...sort of like a pyramid almost eroded down to its base. I've tried modelling this with f-ing toilet rolls and still doesn't work.

As the matter of fact each slice parallel to a coordinate plane is a square and if the cylinder is described by x^2 + y^2 = R^2 then the side has length 2x. Check that out...should give you the idea how to find the volume.
