Why cant I use Wad Cutters in my Marlin 1894S?
I have just bought my first Marlin and put 5o Wad Cutters through it before I saw in the handbook that you should not use them! Anyone know why not? They had a flat nose so no danger there. Also they make such a neet hole!!!
Wadcutter bullets seat flush with the case mouth. Semi-wadcutters have a flat point that extends from the case mouth. Both are for making neat holes in paper targets so they can be easily seen with a spotting scope. I believe the prohibition is against using swaged lead bullets. Swaged lead bullets are very soft lead and don't work well in micro-groove barrels as they will lead up the micro-grooves. If you wish to use lead bullets. use hard cast lead as they are nearly as hard as jacketed. Here is an article with pics on bullet construction:

My motto is when in doubt, read the instructions. So I did. They are not clear on the use of magnum wadcutters, other than maybe they are not long enough, but using Specials, they caution against using them as the forward part of the chamber will get a buildup, making the magnums hard to load/extract, but that is standard for any magnum/special loading. There is no prohibition against semi-wadcutters as long as the minimum length is met. The way around that is if you reload, put all loads in the magnum case.
