how to purify a steam cleaning machine?

I recently bought a steam cleaning machine at a tag sale. It works well but there is a white residue inside. How can I remove this so the steamer can be used in the kitchen without fear of actually contaminating the very surfaces I want to steam clean? Thanks, Jay

Run some vinegar through it and then rinse well with several rounds of water. It is amazing how much more steam you will get if you get the residue out. Vinegar is pretty harmless stuff but does a good job on the residues in steamers and irons.
