Angle Drill

I have a submersable sump pump, and once it's done pushing out water I get water hammering. Do I drill a hole?
I get a knocking noise when the pump is done flushing water out. I believe this is "water hammering" and I need to release some air.
I heard I am supposed to drill a 3/16 inch hole, and angle it DOWN (drill at a downward angle when making the hole).
Where, exactly, do I drill this hole?
Wait... I found the answer.

Any help you can provide me, or any reason why I *shouldn't* do this, would be helpful though. Why would I have a knocking, when the sump pump is done flushing out the water?
I have two sump pumps and both "knock". It is normal to have one knock or thump when the pump shuts off. There is a one-way check valve upstream of the pump that has a round "door" in it. The door opens up only to allow water to be pushed by the pump up and out. However, when the pump shuts off the water that was flowing upward loses its energy, stops and begins to flow backward towards the pump. The door or check valve slams shut with the weight of the water now flowing backward.
If there was not a check valve your sump pump would cycle on and off more often because water would would back up into the sump pit and (for those that discharge into their waste-water drain as opposed to flowing the water outside) it keeps plumbing backups from backing into the sump well.
Anyway things that cause the check valve to be louder than "normal" are:
- Loose piping- secure with pipe straps
- A cheap check valve- quality counts
- The length of pipe upside of the check valve- the more horizontal pipe above the valve, the more head pressure. In this case more pipe, means more water, which means more weight on top of the valve.
If you have a pump you will always have a thump! To lessen the thumping noise I would try securing the pipe first and then installing a better quality check valve. Both should be very easy to do.
As for the hole it has nothing to do with the noise. It simply makes sure the pump does not become air-bound.
Good luck.
