copper sinks
regarding CPU heat sinks, the central part(which gets attached to processor surface) is generally made of?
aluminium or copper.
but the peripheral fins are always made of aluminium? why?
is there any problem in making the peripheral fins with copper(for faster heat transfer)
im having a simpler heat sink completely made of aluminium, with a central mass and diverging fins from it.
now can i copy the shape of this heat sink and make an identical copper heat sink. if so pls suggest me where can i get the copper. and is there any metal which has greater heat transfer rate.
Silver is some 5% better than copper, but cost is too much.
Aluminum has about 53% of the thermal conductivity of copper. Some fancy heat sinks use copper.If you analyze the heat sink, the thermal resistance of aluminum is so good compared to the air that it is transferring to, that there is very little performance difference between copper and aluminum heat sinks. Making the base, where all the heat flows through a fairly thin section of copper gives some minor improvement. In general, making the heat sink in copper is mostly a waste of money, but if you do use copper, make sure it is annealed industrially pure copper (C1100). Almost all alloys have much lower conductivity.
Best ways to improve cooling some is to use a larger sink with deeper fins, put on a bigger fan with faster air velocity, and keep the heat sink clean. They often clog with dust.
Alternately, for big improvement, use liquid cooled system, especially one with a chiller.
