I want to warm up my kitchen--too white?

I have a fairly large family room 14' x 20' and kitchen/breakfast area 10' x 20' broken up by a kitchen bar.

The bar/sink and main kitchen have white corian countertops. The cabinets, all appliances, and the sink are white.
The kitchen walls and family room walls are a Taupe or a Toffee color. The ceiling is white.

Both areas and foyer have light Oak hardwood floor that needs to be resurfaced-so I can go with alot darker stain on the hardwood floors if need be.

There are several windows in both areas so lots of sunlight in the morning as it faces East.
I can paint the cabinets, walls, and redo the floors to warm it up but I cannot afford to replace the Corian Countertops at this time.

I have a week and a half time frame between when the Sellers move out and I move in and want to get at least the floors done for obvious reasons before I move in--if not all of it.

Any ideas or combinations of ideas of what to do to warm up the kitchen up and at a minimum?

Well. it's a thousand times better than starting off with royal blue counter tops or something!! Look at all that white as a positive--you have a blank canvas and can change the whole look anytime you want because you have neutrals to work with.

I don't know whether the house is empty right now, but when you start bringing in your things it will warm up! For now, I would have the floors done, but not in a real dark color--I think that would emphasize the contrast between all that white. I would do a nice warm red oak color or even a light cherry.

I would try warming it up with window treatments, accessories (maybe lots of copper or natural wood items on the walls and countertops) and throw rugs. Make sure you use those in front of the stove and sink to protect your newly refinished floors and bring some color in! Use placemats at the breakfast bar to bring in some color and get some brightly colored pottery or copper urns to hold cooking utensils. I like to have a little black in every room, too. It seems to ground it. For the windows, don't just go with blinds, which may feel to austere. Get some nice valances and choose the rest of your colors and accessories from that.

You can always paint the cabinets later if you still feel that there's too much white, but why not start with minor fixes like accessories? If you buy a bunch of stuff, decorate around and it's still too cold, you can always go to the next step.

Another option is to reface just some of the cabinets--maybe the bar area--with a wood finish. You can do it yourself and it would really make a huge difference for not a whole bunch of money. Another thing that might work is to paint your fridge. They have a new stainless steel paint that is getting lots of good reviews. It costs about $70 for enough to paint two coats on your fridge, but that might be worth it to break up the white. I probably wouldn't do it on a brand new fridge, because I would be nervous about it holding up for 10-12 years (the life span of a fridge), but if it's already 5 or 6 years old, I would consider it! See www.liquidstainlesssteel.com

Also, bring some of the white into the family room area and some of the colors from the family room into the kitchen so that the two spaces will seem more harmonious. If you get a bunch of heavy mahogany furniture and dark upholstered pieces going in the adjacent room you're going to really feel the disparity. Maybe a large white armoire for your tv or something to bring the white cabinetry through to the other area...

I'm so jealous! I've been decorating like mad for 6 years and the house is "done"--at least according to my husband! Thanks for letting me decorate vicariously through you!
