Would this increase the value of an artist's paintings?
What if you buy alot of paintings by a dead artist that are not too expensive, then sell a proportion of them at a popular art auction and set up bidders that will bid on them for alot of money. And then keep selling more of yours at auctions later on again and again having bidders pay large amounts for them.
Would doing this process increase the value of the remainder of your paintings from this artist? Is doing this illegal?
Set up bidders that will bid alot for them, and keep doing this in the future.
This particular stunt (or variations of it) has been tried quite often, with varying degrees of success. It's not a reliable strategy because the art market gets very suspicious when unusually high prices are paid at auction for inexpensive paintings, the dealers and collectors often realise this is an attempt to manipulate value.
The best way of doing it is very gradually and over a long period (10 years or so).
As far as I know it's not illegal, just unethical.
