How do you ferret-proof a mattress?

My mattress and box spring are on the floor so they cannot get under them, but they tear and dig through the sides. I have been able to use wood to patch up the box spring but how can I patch up holes in the mattress? There is no wood to nail things into. Are there staples that can be used on thick fabric? Thanks anyone!

Is keeping your ferrets out of your bedroom an option? If not I haven't heard of staples that can go through wood sorry. I guess just watch them carefully or try and train them to not dig and tear on your mattress. Best of luck!
