What kind & size of drain should we use in a vintage slop sink? ?
We bought a vintage slop sink and want to install it in our Laundry Room. The drain hole opening measures at 3", but when I called a fixture showroom, they said most Laundry Room or kitchen sinks have either 2-1/2" or 3-1/2" drains. Can anyone recommend what kind of drain to use?
Hi, well I'm not exactly an expert on vintage sinks but the whole idea of the size of the drain plumbing for anything that drains water is the volume of liquid that must pass through the pipe and for it to be considered "efficient." One thing that you may want to consider is the placement of this item in or around the house and where you are going to be able to tie in with other plumbing that ultimately carries the liquid to the septic system. (If that's where it's final destination is.) You will want to make sure that you tie the new plumbing into existing plumbing where the flow has plenty of venting for best results. (You may need to sketch out the routes and size of your plumbing under your house and consult a local licensed plumber and explain what you are trying to accomplish.) If it is to tie in real close to where your washing machine drains, you may be ok here. As for the size of your pipe? The standard sink uses 1 1/2 inch ABS or Galvanized steel drain and a bathtub is 2 inch and a toilet is 3 inch. And of course this may be dictated by local building codes. If I were to install something of that size and drain volume, I would use 2 inch plumbing, not to forget what's called a "P-trap," so you don't get septic odors creeping up through your plumbing and into your house. A P-trap traps a small amount of water in the pipe to act as a barrier between your home air and septic air. I hope this helps a little. Good Luck!
