Changing Toilet Seat Cover?
I have an old style Villeroy Boch toilet seat cover I want to change out. The screw (butterfly screw?) is underneath. I managed to loosen it up and unscrew it 1/3 way down a very, very long bolt. Then it just stops even though I can keep spinning. Does this mean the threads are stripped? It doesn't make sense that I can keep spinning the plastic part but it doesn't continue to travel down the threaded bolt. I don't have a bolt cutter so how can I proceed to remove this toilet seat?
I know what you are talking about and the other bad part thing about it is you have to get your nose so close the the toilet to see what you see doing. Even when the toilet is spotless clean it still feels very wrong.
I have had to change a few toilet seat covers in my time and each of them have been a little different in the way they attach to the toilet.
If it was me this is what I would do. Since you have been able to get the Butterfly screw 1/3 down it's most likely getting stuck on some grit and won't move past that and as you turn the Butterfly screw it turns the bolt with it.
First try holding the bolt about Butterfly screw with your fingers or long nose pliers so it doesn't move then continue turning the Butterfly screw. Even try spraying some WD40 around the Butterfly screw.
If that doesn't help go and find and Nut or another Butterfly screw the same size thread as the bolt. Using that start screwing it from the bottom of the bolt all the way up till you get to the Butterfly screw. This will take a long time because how long the bolt is but it will help clear any dirt or confirm if the bolt is stripped or not. If you can get the nut all the way up and back down again you should have no problem removing the Butterfly screw.
