Trench Drain
How can I build a "trench" through my yard to guide water runoff?
I have a long drive way and it travels downhill toward the house, then slightly levels again. There is a large storm-runoff drain on the opposite side of the lawn from the driveway. So every time it rains there is a very large water buildup in the middle of the driveway. How should I go about creating a trench for the water to flow from the driveway to the drain? What tools do I need? Etc.
I too suggest a French Drain of one sort or another. French Drain refers to a specific type of drain but, there are more than one; each has advantages and disadvantages and the "correct" one depends on your conditions. I would head to the library to see what you can turn up there. But, both Home Depot and Lowes have books under their own names that address drainage and various types of drainage ditches and systems.
As mentioned earlier - do call to find out about your the under ground utilities locator services available in your area. In many areas, there is at least one that is government/utility recommended and free. You might want to tell them that you are planting plants as often drainage remedies call for a permit. In our area, it also calls for an environmental impact statement and more.
In addition, to a shovel I recommend looking at what is called a garden fork and a mattock. I prefer the 5lb to 8lb mattock as it requires less manual swing power; you start the swing and let the weight carry it into the ground. In our area, it is often easier to do this type of work while it is still raining. The dirt may weigh more but, it is more penetrable.
