Terra Cotta

What kind of outdoor plant lives well in a terra cotta pot?
I have a slim, terra cotta pot that's about three feet tall, and it's a decoration outside in the garden. I was told that such pots heat up to high temperatures in the sun and drastically cool down at night. What kind of outdoor plant lives well in that environment? I was thinking of something vertical like a palm tree, since its surrounded by bushes; or something colorful, if that more pleasantly attracts the eye.
If it is getting direct sunlight then I would recommend putting something in there that is ok with lotsa sun. You did not indicate how wide it is... however a palm sounds good. If you want a splash of color or something floral, then try the lantana. Doesn't need a lot of water and blooms. Spreads out well too.
