how long will it prevent the leak by using PTFE tape or plumbers putty compound?
What exactly is leaking? Is it a threaded connection, or a slip joint (like the connections on the drain in the sink?
Plumber's putty is NOT a leak sealer in the same way that teflon tape is. Plumbers putty is used under the mounting face of a faucet to preclude incidental splashed water from getting under the faucet and leaking into the cabinet below. Teflon tape is used on threaded connections as a seal. The tape fills into the rough or irregular areas of the threads and "takes up" the space. Often used on iron pipe connections.
