Ceiling Joists... help!?

I am having a hard time finding a joist in my ceiling. I need to drill a hole where there is a joist. Stud finder is not working. My ceiling is regular drywall... so i dont know how to find it!! I do have a ceiling fan which im assuming is on a joist, however, i dont know which way they run!!! Do they run towards the door? Or parallel to the door frame?? Please help! Im in the US.. if that helps...

Hi depending on your roof type will determine which way your joist run. Most of the time they will run grim the front of your house to the back. I would start in the corner on your front wall where your front door is . Measure over 16" and hammer a small nail in the wall.if you don't hit the stud knock on the ceiling with your knuckles moving left to right. You will hear a solid noise about every 16" or so when you do drive a small nail to confirm. Once you locate it there should be joists ever 16" in both directions . Hope this helps
