Anyone have trouble charging their laptop battery and running off the AC adapter at the same time?

I have an HP pavilion dv8000 and can not get the battery to charge while the ac adapter powers the computer and charges at the same time. The battery only charges when my laptop is off. If my laptop is on and is plugged into the ac adapter it automatically kicks off the ac and runs off battery and my battery and power light start flashing. Also if I take the battery out of the laptop and run straight from the ac adapter the computer shuts off upon loading the desktop. Anyone have similar problems? I called HP they sent me a new ac adapter but obviously it did not work. They recommended sending in my laptop for service but can not part with it because of work. I appreciate any help thanks.
