Steel Finish

How to maintain an oxidized steel finish from future rusting?
How to maintain an oxidized steel finish from future rusting?
We are building a house (in a desert dry area). We oxidized our steel columns with water, and someone advised us not to coat it once it's naturally rusted. But we are deeply concerned it will keep on rusting, now, it has an ugly orange color, and I have read about applying linseed oil or penetrol or something, but we want the finish to be matte not glossy! I know that there might be different treatments for indoors and outdoors, we only have one "rusted" column indoors, but we have three massive columns on the terrace! Isn't it dangerous to just leave it like that? I mean, won't we have that loose rust all over our hands when we touch the steel?
1] Varnish
2] Duro [brand name 'Extend'], and others, make a milky latex composition that basically 'Parkerizes' the steel, turning it black and inert. NAPA sells it as a house brand. Great for body work, under the Bondo, to stop the ferroma.
3] I don't see it as dangerous; maybe a hassle, ugly, whatever, but unless they are structural and rust out fast, not dangerous.
