Help with Pectus Excavatum?
I have a condition called pectus excavatum, it means that my chest is sunken. Right now having this condition is really blowing my confidence when it comes to taking my top off in the changing rooms and going swimming, even though what I have is only mild.
I found out that surgery is available to get it fixed, which involves inserting a stainless steel bar under my ribs for a year, obviously there are more complications than what I am making out but you can research that.
I'm looking for advice, should I feel so embarrassed to expose my chest? Is surgery worth considering? From what I have heard from people with it who had surgery they all came out happy with the results and too be honest I can't live with it any more. The way it is now it is definatly affecting my lung capacity because it's really hard to take a deep breath.
I'm quite familiar with the procedure for Pectus Excavatum, in fact was it your question I answered about it a few months back?
Obviously with any abnormality which is visual, one is going to be self conscious about it. Just explain to your friends what it is.
You really needs to have this surgery as soon as possible if it's affecting your lungs performance. The procedure is almost always a great success. It's done under general anaesthetic. you'll have an epidural catheter placed in your back so you will be in no pain after the operation.
It's called the NUSS procedure. An incision is then made either side of the chest and a bar called the Lorenz Pectus Bar is then inserted under the sternum. You can't see it from the outside and it's removed after two years. Surgery is definitely worth it in this instance. Please have a chat with tour Doctor and don't leave it too much longer. The rare risks are just that, rare.
