Gluing or using mortar for laying granite tiles on countertop?
I am in the process of using granite tiles for a counter top. I am using 2 layers of 3/4 " plywood under the granite but was wondering if I should be using a glue under the granite instead of the thin set mortar. Is there a special glue to use or can I just use the carpenter glue on top of plywood. I was thinking that if I used mortar it may dry out over time if warm items are placed on countertop.
Mortar is the preferred method of installing granite. I would suggest either waterproofing the ply wood or using a 1/4" cement board over the ply ( or even both). Then bond to that. Doing granite on a counter top, you use a five point system to install these tiles. Use a latex modified white thin set. A five point system is when you put a good "glob" of thin set on the 4 corners and 1 in the middle, this allows for leveling and getting the granite smooth and no high or low spots from tile to tile.
Using any other type of glue like you were thinking can actually stain or cause the glue to bleed through from the back side and permanently stain the granite.
