Roofing Made

roof leaking? roof made from rocks and tar.?
my roof is leaking and it is a roof made from flat rocks and this black tar. What could be the problem for the leakage?
Your tar is probably old and with colder weather it contracts, thus enlarging the cracks in it. Plus, whatever was put down underneath has also eroded. This type of roof was very popular back in the 50's and 60's and typically put on low slope or flat roofs, since its cost was less than conventional roofing.
I know of no solution for your problem during colder months. During warmer times, you could resurface with tar and another round of rocks if you can find someone to do a house, most of this type of work is done now on very large projects and that is minimal.
You could apply a tarp or heavy plastic film for now, to try to keep the moisture out, but you would have to do some ugly anchoring with long pieces of wood to avoid wind issues, or wrap to the eaves if you can get to them with a staple gun.
If and when you do decide to have it torn off, it is not all that hard to do, but you do have to have a rolloff dumpster for it, as it is heavy. Then you should also remove any underlayment and inspect wood for damage and replace any of same. You can do one of two things then if your truss is stong enough--use a lighter weight asphalt or fibreglass shingle cover, or if you don't mind really ugly, the 36" roll roofing you find at farm supply stores.
Be sure to pay attention to where it is leaking now, although water can travel a long ways before finding a way through, but your wooden underlayment, once exposed, should show you where the leak actually started. Look for discoloration and really inspect the underlayment and replace if it is even a bit spongy. Otherwise, you will always have some load bearing problems and potentially more leaks if it decides to shift on you. Finally, be sure to either take up a sheet of plywood to walk on, or make sure you are walking on the truss members. I saw a guy fall through his roof one time because he stepped on some rotten underlayment. While sort of funny, he sure didn't think so.
Forgot to add, I have seen people leave these roofs in place, add new truss and go with a steeper sloped shingled roof. Depends on your weight bearing walls.
