Rock Bucket

can i add regular rock to cycled salt water tank?
I have a salt water tank already cycled it has been up for a couple months now i was wondering if i can add regular rocks that i found outside to it after i leave them in a bucket with salt water for a couple days
thanks for the answers but i forgot to add i found them on the beach
Are you a Gambler??? Please don't think that I am being condescending or mocking anyone in any way, but regular rock is kind of vague. If you mean any type of rock that isn't store purchased live rock then there are some types that could be used and others that I would strongly avoid. Rocks have many different types with many different structural compsitions. There are types of rock that are not live rock, ie base rock which can be dry coral rock which can be great for creating a base structure for a reef tank with live rock being placed on top of it. Lace rock is one type of rock used for this. Considering you found these rocks on the beach they may be coral rock that has washed ashore. They may be safe, they may not. Coral/"live" rock is generally composed of calcium carbonate and can be though of as similar to limestone. Now if this rock was found on a beach near urban areas, it is very possible it has been exposed to pollution run off, etc. Certain compounds may be embedded in the structure of the rock. For example, phosphate, nitrate, or worse...copper. Over the course of time aquarium rock is slowly disolved by chemical changes or organisms in the tank. So if an urchin or tube worm bores into the rock it could release one of these bad chemicals into the water. Copper could destroy an entire reef tank. Boiling, bleaching, soaking cannot remedy this potential problem. The safest rocks would be types that are very hard and are not prone to breaking down for eons. Diamonds:) granite, quartz are quite stable. Im not a geologist so just be careful or make sure you know what type of rock it is. Dolimite and aragonite are types of stone used for marine aquariums. All that said, the odds are that your beach rock might be harmless, but i would rather pay the steep price for live rock than risk potentially killing thousands of dollars worth of sealife.
