Replacement Rubber

what can i use as a replacement for silicone rubber for a plaster of paris mold?
in the instruction manual i found, the silicone rubber should be brush on top of the figurine before placing a layer of plaster of paris on top..
i think it is use as both as a mold release and to be able to copy the details of the figurine..
will two plaster stick together if i use petroleum jelly?
wont wax or petroleum jelly ruin the details of the figurine?
Usually silicon rubber is not used just as a mold release. You are supposed to cover all potential undercuts with the silicon, so they don't catch within the plaster. Look up what an undercut is, for if you have any, the figurine will be stuck inside the inflexible plaster mold and you have to smash the mold to get it out. That's why you often make a flexible mold from rubber and an inflexible mold from plaster (mother mold).
If you would use it indeed just for mold release petroleum jelly would work.
