How do I get hardened carpet padding up off of a hardwood floor?
I bought a house that has never had the carpet removed. So the carpet pad under the carpet has since become like dirt/cement on the floor and hard to get up with even a putty knife. The floor is hardwood underneath and I want to preserve it in any way that I can. Does anyone have any suggestions of something that I can do to get the old padding up?
I forgot to note that I have tried hot soapy water which makes it worse.
Old padding and mastic are challenges even for floor contractors. The only realistic option is to hire a wood flooring professional. Your attempts to remove the padding with a putty knife may result in cuts/gouges that will prove impossible to completely remove. If you really want to preserve the floor (not to mention your sanity) get a couple of estimates from some long established hardwood floor refinishing companies in your area.^
