Bending Tools

Bending tools include tube & pipe benders, which are specialized machines to bend pipes, tubes and other solid metal structures. These bending tools can be used either by human assistance, they can be driven by hydraulics or they can also be operated by hydraulic motors. The pipe bending tools have to be supported either internally or by an externally section in order to maintain the cross-section of the pipe effectively. This is to ensure that the rigid operations do not deform. However, if the bending tools operation to be performed is flexible, then no such supports are required.

There are various types of bending tools available to re-form metal structures. Some of them are: -
1) Press bending tools – this is the very first kind of bending tool that was created, to be used on cold tubing and piping. A bend shaped die is thrust against the tube or pipe to be changed, and it forces the tube to re-form into the shape of the die.
2) Rotary draw bending tools – these benders use die sets of a steady CLR or centre line radius. There are 2 parts to this, a former die and a counter die. They are the most popular bending tools.
3) Mandrel Bending tools – these are benders that bend pipes or tubes into a fixed radius, without any changes in the tubes shape. It is used mainly when bending thin walled tubes to make it tighter without distorting it.
4) Heat-Induction Bending tools – the pipe to be bent is circled with an induction coil, which is heated to high temperatures and then is pressurized to fit into the desired shape.
5) Roll bending tools – in this process, the pipe is made to move through an array of rollers which apply pressure onto the pipe at gradual intervals to change the pipes shape.

How thick does stainless steel tubing have to be to cut threads in it with a pipe threader?

I'm working on a project using 3/8" stainless steel tubing. I need to cut some threads into it. I was wondering what the minimum wall thickness of tubing was that I could cut threads into. It has to be as thin as possible so that I can continue to bend the tubing with a hand bender. Thanks in advance.

be a little more specific! what are you doing with it? will it need to hold pressure or is it something ornamental? depending on use, you may be able to just use a hand die and heavy wall tubing. approx. .049 +/- is bendable by hand, done it many times with RIDGID benders, what you need to keep in mind is pipe is measured ID, tube is measured OD, so 3/8 tube would have to be threaded with a 1/8" die, many different threads also (npt, bspt, ect.) make sure die is same thread as what your screwing it into.

NON UNION! so I actually know what I'm doing. !9 years ago I had to go to chrysler and teach
their $ 30 hr. guys how to bend 3/8 ridgid copper without breaking it (for $7 hr.) go fiqure! tried for years to get into big 3 and never could.
