What are the most energy efficient ways of heating a home?

Geothermal heating is very expensive to install, and takes a long time to pay off. Radiant heating using pex tubing with hot water in the floor is another option. Any other ideas, or opinions?
P.S. I'm building a new house with completely custom design, so go wild.
P.P.S. The house will be in Maryland area, so temps can be down to 0F in the winter, and are around 40F to 50F in early Spring/late Fall
P.P.P.S. My goal is not to try to go "green," but to save money and make the new house as cheap to live in as possible, which also happens to mean it being energy efficient. Gas in my area is expensive as all heck. My gas-heated house costs $200/month to $400/month to heat, while my totaly electric place is under $100.
