Molding Wood

I have wood trim but want crown molding?
Should I stain the molding or paint it to match the walls? (which will be some kind of off white) That would leave white molding and wood around the windows and doors.
I'm also considering an accent wall of crackle paint. Is that done anymore? I want something timeless.
Someone please let me know if this sounds bad. I have no idea what I am doing.
Thanks,

IMHO, it depends, if you have stain grade trim (solid, one piece wood) which is more expensive than finger joined, you should stain it. if you have fingerjoined trim,, I think you should paint it..
If you decide to stain it, and is has already been installed, you are better off using a gel stain, the good stuff comes in a little white can, about $20 a pop, it is what the pros use, it can even go on top of an existing finish, as long as you rough it up with sandpaper.
I think you should go with something like venetian plaster.
just my 2 cents.
