Metal Barn

How do I clean rust and grime off old metal weights?
When i was younger my dad had an insane amount of weights that he used for his own personal gym. I guess he never needed them anymore and stored them up in my barn. They have been up there for years and after taking them out, it's clear that they have rusted over and become very grimey.
How do i clean these weights so they look better, maybe even new? What sort of product do i need, or will some water and detergent do the trick?
Try some WD-40...=)
