Inch Adaptor

Waste pipe reducer / adaptor?
I've just discovered a leak from my kitchen waste pipe. The 40 mm pipe from the sink goes into a larger diameter pipe of about 50 mm (or about 2 inch). They seemed to have been sealed with putty, but putty has rotted. Is there such a thing as a reducer or adaptor to mate the two pipes together?
I can only assume that we are talking about cast iron (CI) here, you wouldn't be asking if it was plastic, you'd just cut out the bad fitting and replace it. You can buy the fitting you need at any plumbing store, but installing it is a hassle. If this is "service weight" CI (the pipe holds itself up, not the building) then we are talking about a BIG hassle and you really should call a plumber. The problem with all repairs like this is that you have to "make up" the length of pipe that's "eaten up" inside the bad coupler (a reducer type coupler in this case). It's easier to replace 3 feet of pipe (90 cm) than try to cobble in 3 inches of pipe (75 mm). The fun thing about service weight CI is that the loose end can hit you in the head and on the face when you actually get it cut.
Fixing this kind of thing correctly is more than you probably want to do. Just do what the last guy did, grab some two part plumber's epoxy (available at any plumbing supply store) and re-pack the joint. You won't think of it for another 10 years.
Another trick is to take a Fernco fitting (like the guy above me said) and cut it axially with a utility knife then "wrap" it around the problem spot and tighten down the clamps. Finding the right size of Fernco is always the tough part with this one.
