Impact Driver

Can I self repair my broken Impact Driver?
My Bosch 18V impact driver is a little over a year old and while using last week it burnt out. Smoke started coming out of it and it obviously wouldn't work. I looked on the Bosch website and I could most likely find the part(s) I need to fix it up. I guessing the motor on the drill burnt out, so my question is how hard is it to fix it? Or should I find the nearest Bosch service center and have a pro do it for me?
First, verify that the motor is burnt out, which it sounds like it is. Take the case apart and look at the armature and the field in the motor. The armature is the thing that rotates and has copper vanes at the top. The field is what delivers the electromagnetic force that causes the armature to spin. If either of them, and especially if both of them have burnt wiring, melted parts, or the insulation is burnt, then the cost of repairs is going to be more than the thing is worth, even if it's only a year old. It's not that hard to fix, it just doesn't make much economic sense because the cost of the parts is so high. Save your old one for parts in case you need a switch or impact gears in the future. It really isn't worth the time, expense, and hassle of sending it to a Bosch service center because they will probably tell you what I just did, that the parts are going to cost more than it's worth (verify this at http://ereplacementparts.com to see what the bill will be - don't forget to add shipping).
You can get a naked tool (one without batteries or charger) online for less than the cost of an armature, especially if you find a factory reconditioned one. I've been buying reconditioned tools for myself and the shops I've run for years and will never buy a new power tool again. I've always had excellent results, the tools come with new batteries and the original warranty, and I have never had to return one. You can get a naked reconditioned or new Bosch at http://www.cpotools.com or http://www.toolbarn.com though there are others as well. How are your batteries? Look into a reconditioned kit that has new ones, especially if you use the thing a lot, because if you've burnt up a motor that fast, chances are you're tough on them, too.
Sorry to give you bad news, but it's better to know what you're in for before you waste a lot of time and money trying to fix a fatally wounded power tool.
