Hydraulic Pipe Bender
Anyone Good with Physics?
A pipe P is being bent by the pipe bender (it is bending the pipe 15 degrees from the horizontal). If the hydraulic cylinder applies a force of magnitude F = 24 kN to the pipe at C, determine the magnitude of the roller reactions at A and B. (these rollers are on the top side of the pipe while F is being applied to the underside of the pipe at the center. A and B are rollers so that means they're normal to the pipe).
I'm not sure how to go about this problem so if anyone could help me out i'd be very appreciative. Thanks a ton in advance!
This is a "sum of moments" problem. You have to pick a point on the pipe (probably near the middle and at the roller closest to the bend, but any point will do) and sum the moments about that point. (I'm presuming you know what a "moment" is.) Some of the moments will tend to rotate the pipe clockwise around your selected point; others will tend to rotate the pipe counterclockwise. Forces that go directly through your point have no effect (which is why choosing a roller might be best). The sum of the cw and ccw moments must = 0, or the pipe would be rotating. Two other conditions must be met as well: the sum of the vertical forces must be zero (or the pipe would be translating vertically), and the sum of the horizontal forces must be zero. That will give you three equations; as long as you have not more than three unknowns, you can solve the problem.
