What should I consider when purchasing a bike for 50+ mile rides?
About a year ago I purchased an amazing commuter bike and it is exactly what I was looking for. However, I have been going on 30-60 mile rides twice a week and my heavy commuter bike just isn't cutting it for me any longer. I've realized I just need another bike. I've looked at a few bike shops and the people there have shown me cyclo-cross and road bikes that are at least $1000. I've tried looking around craigslist for a used one, but I haven't had much luck. The problem is that I don't really know what I need and what I don't need. As it stands, I've ridden 50 miles in one day on my commuter bike (Breezer) without any fancy equipment or gear and I felt fine. What key things do I need and what may be some of the things people at the shop will try to sell me that I could probably do without?

What makes you think they are trying to sell you something you don't need? Bicycle shops are there for the long haul - to make repeat customers! They want you to be happy with your purchase & tell your friends.
Any bicycle designed for trips 50 miles or more won't be cheap. Good road bikes start in the $650 - $700 price range. The higher the quality of components - the higher the price. If you want or need a bicycle light in weight - look for aluminum frames & possibly carbon fiber forks. If you want a smoother ride - look for a steel "touring" road bike. Yep - I said STEEL. Good old fashioned Reynolds 520 Butted Chromoly Steel.
