Help with metal polishing.?

As part of a home craft project I need to polish a quarter inch square steel bar to a mirror finish:

I have tried smoothing it with whetstones then burnishing it with a hardened steel tile cutter; the finish was good, but it took about 6 hours to do one side [and I have about 30 more bars to do]...

So I went out and bought polishing wheels, brushes and compound compatible with my dremel: I have tried every piece in the polishing kit with and without compound, even tried putting the polishing bits in the hammer drill, but nothing seems to leave more than a scuff-mark...
