Giant Ladder

What is the best way to harvest mulberries from a giant tree?
There's a huge mulberry tree on our property. I assume it's a black mulberry because the ripe fruits are very dark. I've heard that we can just put down a sheet and shake the branches and the ripe berries will fall out. When we try that, though, no matter how hard we shake, we only get a few berries (along with a LOT of dead twigs!) and we can still see lots of ripe berries on the branches. Also, it doesn't help with the berries on the branches out of reach, which is the majority of them, and with all the dead wood up there it seems dangerous to climb the tree. And it's a huge hassle moving a sheet twenty times to get all the way around the tree, not to mention all the berries that don't fall onto the sheet when we're shaking the branches. We see so many yummy looking berries on the ground every day, but we can hardly get any for us to eat or make jam with. Does anyone know a better way to get the berries out, short of getting a ladder and picking them by hand?
BUT I'd try this first--I've used it with excellent success.
YOu need to make a tool for yourself--I've not seen one in a store, and it's simple enough.
What you need is a long tool handle--a long broom handle works very well--and a stout, fairly large hook, and some means of fastening the hook to the handle.
The hook I used would have been about a 6-inch circle, had it been a full circle, if you see what I mean, and it had a tab with two screw-holes. I screwed it to the broom handle and wrapped it with tape--then I stood under the cherry tree and hooked the branches down, and had a willing child hold (or held myswelf with one hand) while I picked with the other. We froze gallons of cherries, and mulberries, too.
I also climbed the cherry tree to pick, and hooked the branckes to myself up in the ttree at well. The mulberry tree was much easier. The trree was down the hill, and the top rested in the yard--right at hand. We easily got mulberries, and they were delicious ones--mulberries need a LOT of sun to develop any flavor, in my experience.
I make a terrific mulberry cobbler! The berries are fairly bland, though--almond extract and lemon juice work well to spark them up.
I use the cobbler recipe from COok's Illustrated's The Best Recipe--the cookie topping one--and it's delicious.
