Engine Generator Set
Does anyone out there know the valve adjustment (settings) for a 1971 VW engine? 1600cc?
I have just replaced the generator, voltage regulator, dist.dist. cap, points, plugs,wiring, battery, and need to adjust the valves. What is the proper setting, or better yet, how do I get there? Thanks in advance. ♥Ginger
The valve gap should be set at .006".
You turn the engine until the TDC mark up on the crank pulley.
But then you still don't know if that is the combustion stroke on 1 or 3.
So you take the valve covers off.
Which ever one is on the combustion stroke will have both valves loose, while the opposite one will have some tension on both valves, as it would have just finished exhaust and moving into intake.
Actually if you understand the implications, then you can see that you can adjust half the valves now, and the other half when you crank the engine over until it comes back up to TDC again.
But if that is too confusing, another approach is to take the distributor cap off.
Just adjust the cylinder the rotor is pointing to, and keep turning the engine until you have all four done.
You know the valves are as loose as they are ever going to get on a cylinder, just before is fires.
