I found a baby bird in my lawn, what to do?
I found a baby bird (I think it's a starling) in my backyard. She's almost old enough to fly, if not, is old enough. Anyways the yard work people came today and put fertilizer in my lawn. So I picked up the bird with heavy-duty gloves and put it on my deck. The thing is she won't fly... she even allows me to pet her (hey, sorry, but she's so cute.) For those of you with knowledge of birds, do you think she's going to be okay? What should I do?
P.S. She's been sitting on my deck for an hour.
If she's a baby bird, she will probably need her mom and dad to feed her. (Is she trying to eat by herself? Does she open her mouth wide when you touch her hoping you'll feed her?) You should put her as near back to where you found her as you can. Possibly somewhere safe where you can keep an eye on her and also where cats and other animals can't get at her. That way, her parents can find her again and feed her. Lots of baby birds jump out before they can fly perfectly (you didn't just get up one day and start walking, right?). If it starts getting dusky and you don't see any adult birds coming for her, you will need to take her inside and keep her warm. You will also need to feed her- call up your pet stores and see if they have the kits for handfeeding baby birds. Usually comes with a syringe and mix. If her parents don't come for her you will need to feed her soon. Birds have high metabolisms, and baby birds (like baby humans) need to be fed frequently. And contrary to what people say, birds will not reject babies because you touch them. Good luck!
