Why buy an impact driver over a drill with clutch?
Seems that a drill can serve the same purpose plus drill holes , Ok I know the impact runs at higher rpm too but what advantage is that?
An impact driver (as opposed to an impact wrench) is a good addition to a cordless drill because it can drive screws faster, easier, and with less chance of breaking a fastener. If you're a homeowner, and you have to choose between the two, then get a cordless drill, but if you already have a drill, then a 1/4" hex drive impact driver is great for putting in screws and lag bolts. I use mine for those reasons and to get machine screws and bolts close to tight, then finish with ratchets and wrenches.
You're right, for a long time, cordless drills with a clutch were the best thing to put screws into wood and sheet metal, but with the advent of the impact driver, you have the option of a quick release chuck, faster speeds, and most importantly, shorter length and lower weight. The manufacturers have combined the two to increase sales by offering two tools for less cost than each would cost individually. Of course, they only have to include two batteries and a charger in a kit rather than four and two, so you don't really get anything for free, but you do get two tools that can use the same batteries. Most professionals have both tools for those reasons, but a civilian would only need the drill/driver for almost all situations.
