How can a dial-up modem download at cable speeds?
On a couple of occasions when I downloaded 10 mb files from various websites with my 56k dial-up modem the download was a continuous 70 kbs - at cable speeds for the whole duration and finished in a matter of seconds. How is that possible? Why don't more download sites offer those speeds for dial-up modems?
There is explanation for that.
56k modem can't do more than 56 kilobits per second, obviously, however the download speed reported by browser may occasionally go above that number because of hardware compression used by dial-up modems.
This can happen when you download texts, uncompressed pictures, or some other types of files that compress well.
However, if you got 10mb file in few seconds, that has hardly to do anything with the modem - the file has been likely cached and browser may just have been reporting wrong numbers.
