Cut Early
For parents whose kids JUST miss the kindergarten cut-off, how do you feel about testing for early admission?
Or would you rather just send your child to kindergarten next year and they will be the oldest in the class? In my state, the cut-off is October 1st. But what if your child's birthday is after that and you feel they are ready to go now? Or you don't want them separated from their friends?
What do you think? What would you do?
I think it really depends on the child. My son was actually the other way round - he was just older than the cutoff date, so he is very young in his year. But he's very bright. He'd have climbed the walls if he'd had to wait another year to go to school - he was already reading silently when he went at 4 and a week. Had he been born on his due date (which was in the next academic year) I would have had to appeal. He was miles ahead of all the other kids in the year he's in - being another whole year later still?
My friend's child was a week younger, very shy, struggled to learn to recognise her name at that age, and my friend was very glad she got to wait a year.
I don't personally feel you should move a child up a year if they're going to just about cope. I think they should be going to be at the top of the year you're moving them up into. Otherwise, let them have the advantages associated with being one of the oldest in the year.
