Can concrete driveway be install during winter?
Currently, our framing has been completed. We still have to do dry wall, stucco on the exterior, and other interiors need to be done. By the time there completed, it'll be Mid November and then the concrete driveway will be applied. I heard it's not good to concrete in the winter, is there a reason why?
I don't want to do it now, because I won't close for another 2 1/2 months and our driveway will get dinged etc from all the subcontractors working on the house. Any suggestions??
Absolutely! Concrete must be maintained above 40 degrees Fahrenheit in order to cure and harden properly. The usual ways of doing that are using hot water and either calcium chloride or a non chloride accelerator. Calcium can cause color variation in the concrete, and is not recommended if there will be any steel in the slab. Calcium causes iron to rust.
Make sure the ground where your concrete is going is not frozen. Cover it with blankets from your local building supply place (you can rent special insulating blankets for concrete there) making a tent over the ground, and heat inside the tented area. After the slab is placed and has hardened to the point that you can walk on it, put the blankets directly on it and secure the edges so they don't come off.
Do not use propane or other combustion heaters to heat fresh concrete. Carbon Dioxide can keep the top layer of fresh concrete from hardening when it mixes with water and causes carbonation. Concrete has a pH of around 12 and carbonation can take it below 10.
Once the concrete has reached at least 500 psi, usually 1 to 7 days, it will be able to resist damage due to a freezing event. Protect it for at least a week, just to be safe.
