The Processing of engineering materials will often have an effect on the properties of the material. Produce a technical report describing the effects of processing on the properties and behaviour of the following metals, polymers, ceramics, composites and the post-production use of smart materials.
1. The cold working of copper bar e.g by drawing into wire.
2. The addition of a foaming agent to polypropylene during production
3. The bonding of silicon carbides during production
4. The steel reinforcement and cement matrix in reinforced concrete
5. The deformation and return to original shape of a Nithol (Nickel Titanium) Alloy smart-spring through the application.
Really Need Help , Very Hard To Research Anywhere... Be Greatfull if somebody could help me out with any of this!
Cold working of copper will harden the material, increase stiffness and brittleness so if this is not advantageous to the end product it must be annealed after drawing to enable further processing.Cold work generates dislocations in the crystalline structure that serve as obstacles to the movement of the crystals. In fact, cold working generates so many dislocations that the configuration is referred to as a "forest of dislocation". Thus, although dislocations cause a metal to be malleable, the increase in density of dislocations makes it more difficult to deform the metal, which therefore becomes harder.
Foaming agent use with PP - benefits of foamed materials are their good mechanical rigidity at low specific gravity, thermal and acoustic insulation, cushioning against mechanical shock and a significant contribution to source reduction in raw material usage. Foamed PP offers wide mechanical property range, low weight, heat stability and good chemical resistance.
Bonding of Si carbides - There is loads of info on this on the www also look at the sintering process used to produce silicon carbide cutting tips.
Steel reinforcement of concrete - again loads of info on this on www - look at effects/improvement on tensile bending strength. Also, benefits of composites generally
