Birdcage Cabinet
What's a great pet for an 8 yr old that won't be prey to our soon to be 2 cats?
I would rather that it not be anything too stinky. Whatever it is she's going to want to handle it, so that is definitely a must. I will be help with the maintenance, which is ok because she spends just as much time with her dad as she does with me.
She's not too skittish about different animals, reptiles or anything like that...actually she's really interested in them. I wanted a bird for my girls to both enjoy, but I can't imagine how to keep them safe from the cats. My aunt had a bird and 2 cats and she kept the birdcage on top of the china cabinet, but once it wasn't placed well and the cat then had enough room to jump up and not down the cage. The bird was fine, but traumatized I'm sure.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
A guinea pig makes a perfect pet for an 8 year old. They're gentle and have great personalities. Keep the cage clean and they are mostly odor-free. It will grow to be a fairly good size- most cats aren't interested in attacking a 2-3 lb rodent.
However, don't trust your cats around anything smaller than them. If you decide to try a pig, make sure there is a firm latching lid on the top of the cage and that the cats aren't tormenting it by sticking their paws through the bars. (Also make sure the cage you purchase is designed for pigs-not rabbits. Their feet are different and a guinea pig cannot stand on wire mesh) I kept pigs and cats for many years without incident. It's like having pets and kids together for the first time- you, as Mom, just have to be vigilant. Good luck!
