How does an anti static strap work?
An anti static strap has a resistance of the order of 1.0 Mega ohm.which is pretty enough to insulate out body from any equipment.For safety of sensitive electronic devices, our body static charge should get discharged to ground. How our body static charge gets grounded through 1.0 Mega ohm resistance? Is it not better to touch the metallic body of the equipment which is already grounded in an effective way?
The number of electrons accumulated typically is very small. The 1Meg resistance is sufficient to drain them off. When you first put it on, it will drain the charge in a second or so, pretty much before you touch anything sensitive enough to be damaged.
With the strap on, it will drain the charge *as* it is being accumulated as you move around and never reach the point that will cause a problem.
While it may be better to directly touch something, you would need to hold on all the time.
